This information was shared by Governor Umo Eno on Tuesday in Uyo during a meeting of stakeholders called by the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC).

Frank Archibong, commissioner for chieftaincy affairs and local government, represented Eno as he presented the election plan to various stakeholders and party representatives.
This event serves as a springboard for all the electoral processes that will lead up to the municipal elections in 2024, he said.

Everyone knows that the governor took office on May 29 of last year. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough time to hold elections for local governments before December, so caretaker committees are now running things.

I am aware of the ways he has pushed the AKISIEC to hold elections for the local government. Since Akwa Ibom State and His Excellency are not interested in being associated with caretaker committees, there is no reason why we cannot have the elections this year.

According to the state’s electoral plan, the newly elected council chairman will be sworn in on December 7, as promised by the governor.

All things considered, the schedule calls for political parties to hold their primaries from July 22nd through August 26th, 2024, with the start of campaigns scheduled for August 26th.

Prior to this, Aniedi Ikoiwak, Chairman of AKISIEC, gave assurances to the political parties regarding sufficient security and the conduct of free and fair elections.

“The Commission will take very practical measures to ensure there is adequate security before, during and after this year’s elections,”Ikoiwak stated, emphasizing the essential necessity of human and material security during elections.
