The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded a thorough investigation into the roles played by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the September 21, 2024 Edo State Governorship election, Monday Okpebholo, in the violence that resulted in the death of a police officer in Benin City, Edo State’s capital, on July 18, 2024.
The PDP insisted that, in addition to the reported offer of scholarships to the slain police officer’s children, the APC officials who planned the violence face prosecution for their thugs’ unlawful and reckless use of force, which resulted in the officer’s death.
The PDP insisted that APC leaders should not be allowed to hide behind the guise of a scholarship to conceal their complicity, manipulate and discourage the family of the slain police officer and the unsuspecting public from demanding a full investigation and prosecution of APC leaders involved in the heinous act.
Hon Debo Ologungaba, the PDP’s national press secretary, accused APC leaders of having little regard for human life, saying they can throw the situation under the carpet and walk away from their crime.
In a statement, Ologungaba said, “Our Party restates its call on the Inspector General of Police to investigate with the preponderance of pictorial and video evidence that show that thugs allegedly mobilised by the APC to escort its Governorship candidate and other APC leaders from the Benin Airport into the city were responsible for the violence that claimed the life of the police officer.
“Our Party again commiserates with the family of the slain police officer while urging the police to ensure that those responsible for his death do not escape justice,” according to the PDP.
