The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 177,914 new voters in Edo and Ondo state ahead of the governorship elections on September 21 and November 16, respectively.
According to a statement released in Abuja yesterday by INEC national commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, there are 119,206 new voters in Edo State and 58,708 in Ondo.
He stated that these figures do not include the 8,847 applications for transfer into Edo and 3,132 into Ondo from other states of the federation, as well as applications for transfer within the two states, which were already recorded in the voters’ register.
The statement reads: “Nigerians may recall that in our Press Statement on Tuesday, 11th June 2024, we released the preliminary figures of newly registered voters for the upcoming Edo and Ondo State governorship elections before the period for claims and objections, followed by data cleaning up using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). These processes have now been completed.
“The number of new voters in Edo State is 119,206, while Ondo State has 58,708. These data do not include the 8,847 transfer applications from other states to Edo State and 3,132 to Ondo State. Similarly, they exclude applications for transfer within the two states because they are already on the voter rolls.
“The new voter and inter-state transfer data are being incorporated into the old register.
